The "artificial moon" that will illuminate a city in China

Luna sobre Chengdú

SUMMARY

The Aerospace Research Institute of Chengdu is developing an artificial "Moon" that will be able to illuminate an entire city at night. In addition it will be visible from other countries.

The estimated date to put it in orbit is 2020. We don't know the exact measures or how the project will be financed yet, but the objective is to save the largest quantity of money to the city, and according to the president Chunfeng it could be possible to save up to 170 M dollars in electricity.

It was also commented in a conference that if the project is successful, three more artificial moons will be launched in 2022.

But apart from the economic benefits, it could also have negative effects for humans, animals, plants and the entire Earth that will have to be analized carefully.

SCIENTIFIC SCOPE: Science and technology
GLOSSARY: Aerospace Research Institute of Cengdu - ARIC
Chunfeng - president of the organization responsible for the project.

COMENTARY

I believe that the idea of creating an artificial moon can have many benefits for everybody, especially economic ones, but we will must study with precision the effects and the consequences that it could have.

In my opinion, the first step should be a meeting with all the countries that are involved, since, as the news commented, this moon will be seen from foreign countries and perhaps not everyone agrees.

If they decide to accept the cretion of this Moon, then, they should predict the possible consequences that may have on living beings and the entire planet in general.

But, if after all, it's concluded that there won't be negative effects or ones that can be solved easily, then, this will have been a huge step towards the future and something that could be done around the world.
